The Brick Store Pub
With today being Friday, I figured we can concentrate on good beer. I consider myself very fortunate to be within walking distance of my favorite bar ever. That is a tall statement, seeing that I used to live in Chicago and had some favorite haunts. While my favorite brewpub is in Chicago (Goose Island), the best bar in the land is the Brick Store Pub in downtown Decatur, Georgia. They have over 200 bottled beers from around the world and another 17 on tap.

It’s one of those pubs that has great atmosphere; a mixture between an English or Irish pub along with an Old World feel to it (think of the pub displayed in the first Lord of the Rings movie). The food is decent but the addition of the Belgian Beer Bar in the upstairs makes it the coolest bar I’ve known. There are 8 Belgian beers on tap upstairs and the great thing is you can’t find these types of beers on tap in America unless you really search. For those of you hardcore beer lovers, check out what they have on tap.

Delerium Tremens
Abbaye de Rocs
Biere de Boucanier
Chimay Cinq Cents
Saison Dupont
Gulden Draak
St. Bernardus ABT.12
Corsendonk Pater

For those beer snobs in Atlanta like me, get thyself over to the Brick Store with haste. There is world-class beer to be quaffed.

In order for this post avoid just being a blatant ad for a bar, I figured I would relate a semi-interesting story regarding this place. One weekend I was doing my daily walk and decided to meander around the town square area, which is where the Brick Store is located. This was about 1 PM and there was only one guy sitting in the outside seating area, right by the entrance. The dude was abviously wacked out on something illegal and he had lines shaved into the side of his head, because that is obviously a fashion statement that we all will be picking up pretty soon. As people were walking in, he was telling people to stay out of there because there were flying dolphins and insane monkeys inside the bar. Patrons were giving him the "you're insane and we will just nod in order for you not to flip out" look as they walked in. You gotta love people who have been up for 3 days while on acid who are just looking out for your interests. I sure as heck wouldn't want to be hurt by flying dolphins, so I thanked him for the heads-up.

Cheers. And watch out for the Flying Monkeys.

John, I always had the intention of going to the Map Room while in Chicago but there is always that sedentary preference to go to a bar in the area that you live, in my case Kelly's On The Green which was on Greenview, just south of Diversey. I've heard great things about the Map Room and I'll try to make a stop there the next time I'm in town.

Next time you're back in Chicago, get over to The Map Room at Armitage and Hoyne -- similar beer selection. My sister used to live a half-block from the place, now that she's in Boulder I'm going to miss being in stumbling distance of it on my visits. I did bring some Goose Island IPA, Gulden Draak, Chimay and Duvel out to Boulder for her when we moved her in...which when she finally finds time to drink it will add up to a wonderful night she'll never remember. :)
